Remember that I am the scared one, the really scared one? However, I have indeed learned some tech things. Before I worked with Jennifer S. and others, I would have gone directly to Google or some similar site. It is easy and fast and I don’t usually have a lot of time. Also, I did not realize that Wikipedia wasn’t a factual site. That anyone could make comments or redesign the information from that site. Now, to begin research I might still use the internet to go to an educational site such as ERIC or EbscoHost. After linking up with these sights I am sure that I could use their other links to gather more information.
After talking about the validity of the information, I would probably use the methods that we discussed today to check for that (urbanlegends/snopes). I suppose that I was one of those gullible people who thought it had to be true if it was on the internet. I can also use the library more efficiently now. I don’t know when I will get the chance to use these skills with the library, since our little town doesn’t have a library.
I know how to ask for the information. I have a pretty good idea about where to access the information from. Now I have more tools at my disposal for evaluating the information. I can use the information, maybe not in as many ways as possible. And I can use it ethically, I think. Although, I may not know about all of the pros and cons when it comes to this part of the process.
I am working with third grade students who have not had a lot of experience with research of any kind. They have used internet to locate information on specific subjects in order to make posters or fact lists. Actually, the more experienced ones probably don’t use more than the internet and an Encyclopedia. Yes, they do need more opportunities to do research.
Our Jennifer, the embedded librarian, who faithfully attends our sessions, with a smile on her face and love in her heart. I feel so very comfortable with Jennifer S. I think that she is very knowledgable about her vocation. What is the most important thing that I learned. I don’t really think that I can specify one thing. Almost everything that she showed us was new for me. Generally speaking, she showed us several different ways, sites, where certain information could be found. She always had our best interest at heart and wanted to help us with anything that she could. I am so glad that she was/is here. The same can be said for the infamous Ian. He is always willing to help any of us, and he stays after hours. He is always here when I am playing “catch-up” after class.
This is not anything that she had control of but it would have been nice to have had more time on the topics that she taught. Of course I would say this because I am so slow at executing the commands and remembering where, the what is.
Thanks to you, you all, for all the help you’ve given to me, to us.
