I like this piece. It's interesting how the memories sort of sift together--connected but each one is discrete. Like the title, I guess--they layer.

I'd be curious to read more memoir pieces like this about this time period. Some of the details seem vague to me. I found myself wonder "why?" often. Why does she need to get away from her cronies? Why does it matter so much what people think of her in her flip flops? Not that it's bad to wonder why. It made the piece feel like it was a small snapshot of something larger. I kind of like that feeling, but I'd also like to see the big picture. If that makes any sense.

Aha...here's a small problem with Summer Institute being in the summer (besides the fact that if we moved it we would have to change the name)...teachers aren't in their classrooms then - they can't make immediate application. This is wonderful that you are mastering one strategy at a time and USING it! Ian's the best, isn't he?

Shoot, Patsy. It's fun driving down there and playing on the computer with you.

I think those are great ideas for using PowerPoint in your classroom. You're right. Summarizing is a key part of making a presentation. What a better way to practice the skill?

The artist David Byrne (he's the front man for the Talking Heads--you know, the guy that wears the giant suit and sings "Burning Down the House") uses PowerPoint as a tool to make digital art pieces. I think it's interesting because he views the software as a platform for doing more than just making presentations. Here's a little thing on his website about it:

Patsy,
You are truly an amazing writer. It's a little uncanny how you can sum up some of MY own inner feelings in YOUR writing. Keep it up, girl! Love ya.
